Russell Porterfield Wilson

–

Whitehall, Ohio

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Russell P. Wilson, 85, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Keyser, West Virginia, he passed away at home on September 24, 2026, where he was cared for during his final days.

Born in Keyser, Russell was the son of the late Joseph F. Wilson Sr. and Rosa L. (Kenny) Wilson and a graduate of Keyser High School.

Russell was a dedicated union member and hardworking laborer with the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA), working with Local 310 and Local 423. Throughout his career, he worked in road and bridge construction, heavy highway construction, building trades, and structural construction throughout Ohio.

Though he lived in the city, Russell was a country man at heart, forever rooted in the mountains of West Virginia. Known as “The Man of the Mountain,” he loved nature and enjoyed football, especially his Ohio State Buckeyes and Los Angeles Raiders. He had a green thumb for gardening, loved grilling and cooking, enjoyed hip-hop and rap music, and was skilled with his hands, especially when it came to building and creating. He was also an Auxiliary Member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3764, where he built lasting friendships and connections.

Above all, Russell cherished his family and took great pride in being a grandfather. He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Don Russell Green, Jeffrey Wilson, Tori Wilson, and Tiffany Wilson-Fullen (Christopher Fullen); his stepson, Bradley Stepter; and his grandchildren, including Kiara Spaulding, Ksuan C-Wilson, Alayzah Wilson, Dre Spaulding, Kianna Searls, and Christopher Fullen II, along with his other grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his siblings, Kenneth “Stretch” Wilson, David “Bruce” Wilson (Bertha), Charles “Charlie” Wilson, Rosemary Renz-Wilson, and Alisa Santiago (Louis); along with many cherished nieces and nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Richard Wilson and Joseph “Fox” Wilson.

Russell formed many meaningful friendships throughout his life. Among those he held especially dear were Oneil Jones, Earl Bruce, and Charles McDaniels, along with many other special friends who shared his journey and memories.

In his final days, Russell was blessed to remain at home, cared for by his daughter and supported by his son-in-law throughout his later years and final months. He was surrounded by love and comfort as he peacefully transitioned. In keeping with Russell’s wishes, his remains will be scattered in the Potomac River, a place connected to the mountains and home he carried in his heart. The Man of the Mountain may be gone from our sight, but his stories, sense of humor, and love will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
